Day 5: CSI & Zack the dog

Ofc. Lagergeren - SJPD
CSI- responsible for physical evidence. He arrived around 5am. He was the "second in-charge" CSI at the crime scene (the lead CSI will testify later). He used a gaze pad to retrieve scent from the suspects steering wheel. He also searched the Delia address where the weapon was destroyed. He found the two pieces of the gun in the garage. He was very familiar with the Colt 45 model 1911 because that is the weapon he used as a reserve officer in Santa Clara. There was also an impression of parts of the gun in the cement of the garage like someone was pounding it on the ground. Defense: He said that they preserved the tan Hyundai before the K-9 units arrived. The scene was taped off in multiple areas and everyone who entered was inventoried. He didn't see anyone touching the car after he arrived. Another officer took more scents from the car, but they weren't used by the bloodhound. He has no knowledge of who touched the steering wheel.
Ofc. Baughn & Zack the dog(bloodhound)
He had Zack since he was only 8 weeks old from Canada. Zack retired in 2006. Bloodhounds have a large "O" factory. "O" factory is the smelling part of the nose. He attended schools on how to work with dogs. "Trailing" refers to the term for bloodhounds. They follow a scent and don't actually run after suspects and attack them. Their job is to follow scents. German Shepard's are to follow in pursuit of suspects and possible attack them. Zack is the decision maker in their relationship. He has to follow the trail because he is the only one that can smell it. Zack took classes in other states, and has 500 documented trails. He has found suspects, and even missing people. Ofc. Baughn was qualified as an expert bloodhound handler on trailing and communicating with Zack. Zack has been on the force since Jan. 2001. They arrived at the scene at 6:30am. Ofc. Baughn walked Zack around the crime scene to get him use to the distractions and scents of the area. Once the harness was put on Zack the officer chose the scent pad from the steering wheel because the driver would have needed to touch that piece of the car. Zack followed the scent to the north sidewalk of Calle Almaden. Halfway up the street at around 1123 Calle Almaden, Zack turned and wanted to go into the backyard. The "Merge" team(aka swat) had to go in first to clear the backyard of any possible suspects. Once the backyard was cleared(clearing backyards had to be done every time a backyard was going to be used by Zack), Zack continued on the trail. In the first backyard the handler noted that the fence had scuff marks and a broken branch. Zack went through another yard and made it out to Porto Alegre (the cross street to Calle Almaden). Zack then followed Porto Alegre north, switching sides of roads and then went to a small court called Porto Alegre Court. Zack went through this backyard and ended up in a pasture which was used by a group of Llamas. The field was searched by the Merge team as they spread out to make sure there was no suspect in the field. The Llamas made Zack very nervous and he ended up losing the scent by Almaden Expressway and Coleman Ave. Defense: His answer to the questions. There are no certifications for state and National standards of bloodhounds. Zack never found a person or articles of clothing along his trail. He started Zack out around 7am he didn't see any other dogs out there. They might have been staged in cars on McAbee though. A German Shepard followed Zack along with the Merge team. The ofc. didn't see the other SJPD bloodhound there, but he could have been in the car. Zack didn't go into the backyard before getting any scents. The other scents that could have been used were "from the left and right gloves in the car, headrest, inside left glove". There could have been multiple scents in the car, but there has to be one leaving the scene for Zack to pick it up. At the conclusion of the trail he mentioned the fence scuff marks to CSI. He doesn't know if they processed the fence.
Ofc. Pedreria- SJPD
K-9 unit leader. There are two teams of K-9. Each has 1 bloodhound and 5 German Shepard's. Bloodhounds are used for missing people, scents, and trailing scents. German Shepard's are used for arresting suspects and close pursuit of suspects, and not to expose bloodhounds to danger because bloodhounds are defenseless(they don't attack, they paw people they are looking for... German Shepard's bite). Defense: K-9 units staged at the corner of Porto Alegre and Calle Almaden. German Shepard's cleared backyards on the north side of Calle Almaden before Zack arrived. There was only one German Shepard per backyard. No report was written on German Shepard's clearing backyards.
Ofc. Navarro- SJPD
Towed the Black Mustang from the opposite cul-de-sac. He didn't write a report, and has no time. Defense: Address of were the car was towed from was not listed either. Vehicle appeared to have been in a collision.
Steven Johnson- Cousin to Tyree Washington
He was at Tyree's apt the night of the shooting. Tyree was in and out of the apt. that night. He was 16 in 2001. Cousins Marquis Washington, Chris Washington, Billy Metcalf were all there. Tyree was 5-6 yrs older then him. Steven probably had a drink that night. Never met Campbell before. He told the police the truth. He told police Campbell came by that night along with Turo Collins and "Cin". He was sleeping that night and didn't remember too much. Defense: Was at Oak Grove HS at that time. Didn't smoke weed that night, but was asleep and it was a long time ago and CRS(can't remember s**t).
Ofc. Rose- SJPD
Violent crimes enforcement team (VCET). He interview Steven Johnson at Oak Grove HS. Someone claimed that the suspect changed at their house but actually was erroneous. It was actually Johnson, 2 Washington's and Metcalf where the suspect changed. Johnson wasn't very cooperative. He changed stories a few times. He said he went to a party and returned to Tyree's apt. around midnight. He saw Campbell at the apt. later that night and ID'd Campbell with a photo. Defense: He didn't take Johnson to the PD for a formal interview. He was being evasive during the interview. He was only shown a photo of Campbell and not a "photo lineup".
Pete Ramirez- SJPD
Used phone records to trace calls. Tyree Washington had 3 cell phones and they were all confiscated. Two phones were used and one had no activity. Phones didn't reveal names, but numbers called. He also got Edwin Campbell's phone records, and seized his phone. Also got Robert Campbell Sr. phone which was registered under his girlfriends name, along with Quincy Gilbert's phone and records. At 4:36am Tyree's phone called Robert Campbell Sr. (10 mins after Jeff was murdered, and remember Campbell went to Tyree's apt to get a phone.... crazy coincidence)
Ofc. Cusimano- SJPD
Lead CSI at the scene. Arrived around 6am with the CSI van/supplies. Once Jeff was pronounced dead at the scene a perimeter was set up to keep it preserved for CSI. No one was allowed to touch the vehicles or any evidence. There was a Tan Hyundai 1989 in the driveway. When I refer to #'s it is evidence markers used by CSI. #1 marked a shell casing found near the driver side rear tire. #2 marked Jeff's flashlight in the gutter. #3 was a disposable blue Bic lighter. #4 was a black papermate pen. In the car: #5 blue disposible bic lighter( crazy how there is one in the car and one on the ground outside of the car) #6 gloves on the passenger seat, #7 blue sweatshirt in the back seat #8 glove box crap(receipts of car work done.... listed owner Campbell). #19a/b was a piece of cardboard and an ATM card with the name of DeShawn Campbell on it(weird). The suspects car also had a cracked windshield, balled tires, it shook and bucked as it drove, smoke came out of the exhaust, and had a light bulb out in the rear tail light ( all vehicle code violations that could have been reason for a vehicle stop by Jeff) . Ofc Cusiman left the scene at 12:20pm. Jeff's car had engine on, lights, red & blue lights on, rear amber's lite up. his driver side door was open and his radio was on. His duty belt was intact and his holster was still snapped. They did a gun residue kit on the suspects car and found no residue meaning the shot came outside the car.

That was it for today. Ofc. Cusimano will be back on the stand tomorrow......

  1. It is so sad that the losers in life can end the life of someone who was such a loving, caring person and who would have continued to give so much goodness throughout his life to make this world a better place.

  2. Olfaction (also known as olfactics or smell) refers to the sense of smell. This sense is mediated by specialized sensory cells of the nasal cavity of vertebrates, and, by analogy, sensory cells of the antennae of invertebrates. For air-breathing animals, the olfactory system detects volatile or, in the case of the accessory olfactory system, fluid-phase chemicals.
