Day 8: Tyree Washington and Deon Watts

Tyree Washington
He has known Campbell for about 11 years. He also went to the party on Rotterdam. He went with to the party with Brian, Freddy, Jackie, and Marisa. He had two cell phones at the time. One was his personal phone and the other was what he called a "house phone" but he let other people use it when they needed a phone. He played football with one of the persons who lived at the house. He was drinking that night, but he is a big guy so he never got really drunk. He pointed out that he isn't friends with Campbell. They have a grudge from way back. He knows Rodney McNeary, Rashann Yarber (aka Young life), Turo Collins, Deon Watts and saw them at the party. There was a fight at the party between 5-10 people in the back yard. He said DC mentioned something about being in a fight. He didn't see any weapons or hear any gun shots. He decided to leave with the people he came with because of the fight that started. The fight continued out front of the residence. He saw the fence that had been knocked over. He knew McNeary was driving a black mustang that night and saw a black mustang run into a older cougar. He lived down the street on Coleman across from Lake Almaden, so he and his friends decided to go back to his place. Already at his apartment his father and a few brothers and cousins. They got back to the apt. between midnight-2am. About 15mins after they arrived Deon and Turo got to the apt. A few mins later RayRay and Campbell showed up. RayRay and Campbell where out of breath and sweating a lot. There was anger about the party fight. Since they weren't friends, this was the first time Campbell showed up at Tyree's apt. Campbell stayed for about 15 mins. While at the apt. he said he got "jumped" at the party. He said he was mad, but never said if he was going back to retaliate. A CD of the interview Tyree gave to police was played. The interview was from the county jail on Nov. 2001. Lane, Tyree's attorney, and 2 detectives were in that interview. Tyree said he was only telling half truths and that he was just blabbering on trying to get out of jail. At the party Rodney asked him if he had a gun. In the interview it he said it was "Young Life". He doesn't know why he said " Young Life" asked him for a gun, because he is still friends with him. He was jailed for being an accessory to murder. Campbell showed up at his apt twice that night, once after the party and once after the shooting. He was first interviewed at the police station but didn't tell the truth he "cut the story short"(most people call that either lying or covering up). The detectives arrested him because he said he never saw Campbell the night of the shooting(ohhh and he still claims he is innocent). While in jail, he asked his lawyer to set up the 2nd interview with police to show good will, but still blabbed a little bit. Campbell left with Turo and Deon the first time. The 2nd time he came back around 4:30am, Tyree was playing video games or testified he was taking a #2, Campbell was again out of breath and needed a phone. Tyree gave him a phone and Campbell made some phone calls. We don't know at what time this happened but Robert Campbell Sr. called Tyree back that morning. Tyree was sitting right next to Campbell while he was making these phone calls but didn't hear anything that Campbell talked about. Another portion of the interview was played. Tyree was at his aunts house when he learned that an officer had been killed. He broke down. He was emotional because someone had died and that he was scared that the police were after him. He eventually knew that Campbell was a suspect but didn't realize he had potentially important information. When Campbell was at Tyree's apt. the first time he made a call to Rodney McNeary at 2:35am. Then Lane went over a series of phone records from Tyree's phone after the shooting. The first call out was to Robert Campbell Sr. at 4:36am(Tyree never had Campbell Sr. phone number and had never called him before this time on this day). They went over calls that happened from 4:36am - 6:22am. There were calls to Campbell family members and Quincy Gilbert, who Tyree didn't know or ever call. Even though he was sitting next to Campbell Tyree doesn't know anything he said. He said Campbell was not calm during this time. He pointed out he is not afraid of Campbell or his family and he is not protecting Campbell, he is trying to protect himself. He tried to be honest during the jailhouse interview but didn't tell the "full truth". He just wanted to get out of jail. Tyree said the 2nd time Campbell came to his apt. he was holding a small black bag. It was bigger then a CD holder but it looked empty to him although he never looked inside the bag. For not talking to police Tyree ended up pleading no contest to accessory to murder, which was plead down to accessory to a felony... which was reduced to a misdemeanor.DEFENSE:When he was first interviewed by Ramirez and Edwards he talked to them for about an hour before they arrested Tyree. He was drinking that night, beer and hard alcohol, but he never got really drunk. After the party there were about 8 people at his apt. He has a small apt, so when people are talking it gets pretty loud and he didn't know who said what. As Freddy, Brian, Jackie, and Marisa left RayRay and Campbell showed up. Tyree remembers being asked a lot of question by police but didn't answer them. Tyree kept asking for a lawyer(he saw it in a movie once and thought that is what he should do). They finally arrested him and told him he could serve as much time as the murderer for being an accessory. He remembers calling his babies mama from jail but doesn't remember talking to anyone else from jail. They gave him testimony that he spoke to his father, but he didn't remember that conversation with his father. He wasn't given bail for about 4th months, else he would have paid the bail to get out. He told police that he hasn't seen Campbell since the summer time when he first spoke to police. He was jailed for not cooperating, but he felt he didn't know anything about the murder. At the party, he pointed out that Rodney asked if he had his "Rallo"(gun), he said he didn't have it. Campbell never said anything that night about a Rallo. When he told police that people were stabbed at the party it was a rumor he heard. The bag that Campbell was carrying didn't look full, but there could still have been something in it. LANE: For his jailhouse interview Lane never promised him anything. He also lied to reports who interviewed him in jail.
Deon Watts
He is in the custody of the state of Arizona. He is friends with Campbell. He also knows Turo, Rodney, Tyree and Rashann(who he called RayRay... crazy that that isn't even his nickname). He went to a party on Rotterdam that night and got into a fight. He didn't know why people were "jumping" him and his friends. He can not recall who else was fighting because he was in his own fight at the time. He says there were about 15-20 people fighting. He doesn't drink. He drove to the party in his "bucket" an old probe or Toyota. He went with Turo Collins. They left the party because of the fight, and drove off in a different direction then Rodney drove. He didn't remember a fence being knocked over or that Rodney got in an accident, because he was trying to leave quickly because people were chasing him. He then drove around looking for Rodney but never found him, so he went to Tyree's apt. He used Tyree's phone to make a few calls and then left Tyree's house with Campbell. He dropped Campbell of at his house on Lochner around 3:30-4am. DEFENSE: He has always tried to be truthful. He doesn't know what ever happened to his car, or even if the police impounded it. He doesn't remember what Rodney drove but thinks its a black mustang. He also doesn't remember if Rodney said " we need to get out of here" or "someone had something" at the party. Deon was in the middle of the fight. He didn't see any weapons. He had a bottle thrown at him as he was leaving the party. He ran from the fight, jumped the fence and left. He looked for Rodney but didn't find him, he never heard from Rodney until later that afternoon. He called Janelle Carter (Rodney's baby mama) to see if she had seen Rodney. Rodney lived close to Tyree so he stopped by Rodney's house first before going to Tyree's. Rodney wasn't there. He then gave Campbell a ride home from Tyree's. LANE: Rodney wasn't shook up when he saw him the next day

That's all for the week....

NEXT WEEK THERE WON'T BE COURT ON WEDNESDAY BUT THERE WILL BE COURT ON FRIDAY!!!
