Capt. Edwards- SJPD
He was one of the detectives investigating this homicide along with Det. Ramirez. He went to the crime scene on the morning of Oct. 28th and was still working when he interviewed Tyree Washington at around 10pm (long day). Capt. Edwards had information regarding if Campbell had been at Tyree's apt that night. Washington's cell phone records showed calls to Campbell's family that early morning. At the time of the interview, Campbell was a fugitive in the homicide, and the interview was recorded. At this point, LANE played a 57 minute interview between the detectives and Tyree. DEFENSE: No questions.
Quincy Gilbert- Campbell's BEST FRIEND
He is in custody in northern California fire camp, sentenced for 2nd degree robbery. He is Campbell's best friend, they spent a lot of time together(i know, its cute). He started off the night of the 27th off in Oakland at a party, without his best friend. He was there when he got his first call, he thinks from Campbell, at about 1:45am. He was interviewed by police later on Oct. 28th, and told them the "truth". He says he received about 3 calls that night from Campbell. He got back to his house around 3:30am-4:00am that night. He went straight home from the party in Oakland. At this point he lived about 1.5-2 miles from Campbell's house. He said he went straight to bed, and didn't drive by Campbell's house. He did testify in a previous hearing for this case on 2/4/02. In 2002 he was involved in a serious motorcycle which he received a "double-concussion", and was in the hospital for a month and has "some" memory problems. The 2nd phone call was when he was driving from Oakland to his house, well his friend D was driving that night. The 3rd phone call was from Campbell. Someone had told Gilbert that Campbell got jumped that night. In the last call, Campbell asked to be picked up around Blossom Hill. There were like two people giving Gilbert directions to where Campbell was. Campbell was at an apt. complex. Gilbert was driving a truck when he went to pick up Campbell, and like non-suspicious people, Campbell jumped in the open bed of the truck and was driven to Gilbert's house. Gilbert didn't know why he jumped into the bed of the truck and laid down. He doesn't remember talking about anything, just saying "what's up?". When they got back to Gilbert's house, Quincy went in and went to bed, and Campbell stayed outside and used Gilbert's cell phone. When Gilbert woke up Campbell was sleeping on his couch. He's sure he talked about the night before but doesn't remember what was said. It has been 7 1/2 years. He does know Tyree Washington. He didn't talk to Tyree that night, so that means Campbell must of been on those calls. At 4:58am he called Tyree to let him know he was outside the apt. complex. They went over some other calls to Robert Campbell Sr. and Gilbert says he didn't speak to him so it must have been Campbell. Last time he testified that Campbell got "jumped" at the party. Before this incident, Campbell had told him he had warrants out for his arrest. Another CD interview was played. Later on the 28th, around 7am, he did drive by Campbell's house and saw all the police cars there but still didn't wonder what happened with Campbell the night before. He is NOT trying to protect his best friend either. DEFENSE: We know this was 7 1/2 years ago but try your best for us. He was driving back with his friend D. He was probably smoking a blunt that night. He often did that. He did have some drinks that night also. As he drove home around 3 am he drove by Campbell's house to see if Campbell was there, but he wasn't so Gilbert drove home and went to sleep. Once home he started to get phone calls. Campbell sounded scared and nervous. He then left and went to pick up Campbell at the apt. complex. He saw someone else in the bushes when he picked up Campbell (the defense tried to sneak this part in but an objection was sustained by the judge, they are trying to say Rodney McNeary was in the bushes). When he saw Campbell he said it "was all bad". They didn't get into any conversation about this to his recollection. He just let Campbell use his cell phone when he got back to his house. The police asked if he knew Rodney McNeary, and he did know him and knows his nickname of "sic-loc". Gilbert doesn't know if that nickname is because McNeary is sick & crazy. Later in the afternoon, Gilbert drove around the neighborhood to see what was going on and talked to a local friend named Anthony Cannon. Cannon asked if Campbell shot someone, Gilbert didn't know. LANE: Why didn't you call police and tell them you had information about Campbell? Because he is not guilty of anything. ( maybe then you could have proved his innocence ....... or you hid him because you knew he was guilty).
Tomorrow is going to be a short day, and not court on Wednesday. There will be court on Friday though....
