Day 29: I have some bad news, My flash drive died.

DeShawn Campbell-- Continued
Campbell was sitting in the driver seat when McNeary shot the officer. Campbell then got out of the car and was handed back the gun. The first time Campbell heard the police were looking for him was at Sebastian Cadena's house. While he was a fugitive he had the gun tucked in his waistband on his back. Sebastian didn't allow him to stay at his house. Sebastian gave him a ride to Overfelt high school. Campbell stayed the night on a bench at the high school. The next morning he called his cousin Tracy on a pay phone. Tracy picked him up and told him the NAACP wanted him to turn himself into police. Tracy drove him to Capital Expressway and 7 Trees Blvd so he could turn himself in, the NAACP was suppose to be there with police. Campbell got scared and got out of the car. Campbell was scared of police because of what happened to the officer. Campbell walked to his friend Priscilla's house. Paulo answered the door at Priscilla's, Campbell stayed at her place for 5,6,7 days. Campbell couldn't really sleep well at that time, he tried to sleep on the floor of Priscilla's room, and on the couch in the living room. People were in and out of her house, he only remembers Priscilla and JT. Campbell saw news and that he was wanted, it made him scared and sad. Campbell didn't want to turn himself in because he didn't want to be labeled a snitch. Campbell thought he would labeled a snitch because he would have to talk to police and tell them what happened. Campbell was worried that McNeary or his associates would get him. Campbell was also worried that McNeary could go after his daughter who is blind. (is he scared they would get his daughter because she was blind or because she was two years old) He gave the murder weapon to Gerald Kisson. Gerald, Louella, and Maurice were all talking in a back room, he asked Gerald to get rid of the gun because if the police caught him with it they would shoot him. Campbell talked to Gerald about the shooting. Gerald asked if he did it, Campbell can't remember what he said, he was stressed about all the questions and he wanted to questions to stop. When Gerald asked, Campbell nodded his head, but he did that because he didn't want to talk. They discussed about what was on the TV, they talked about Tyree being arrested, talked about the police looking for Campbell and that he had warrants out for his arrest. Campbell may have said: " I had warrants, I panicked, I f**ked up". When he says "f**ked up he was talking about giving the gun to McNeary. When he talks about panicked, he means running away. He then asked Gerald for a ride to someone else's house. Campbell wrote a letter while at Priscilla's house because he thought the police would kill him. The letter was to:
Mom Taytay: niece
Dad Tavia: daughter & baby mama Mischa
Robert Jr. (brother) & girlfriend Laurie Renee: niece

Campbell referred to his brother as "blood" means friend, dog, partner, and family. It has multiple meanings not only gang banging meaning. Campbell isn't in a gang. Cambell was stressed, scared and hopeless when he wrote the letter. Campbell was scared of being killed by the police or McNeary. Now he said he was scared of McNeary's friends. Campbell left Priscilla's house because her daughter was coming home and he didn't want the police there. Louella and Gerald come in a car, and Campbell got into Louella's car. Campbell sat in the backseat, he ended up laying down in the backseat because he was tired, and so no one saw him. Campbell was taken to one of Paulo's friends houses by 7 Trees Blvd., the person wasn't there. Campbell was then taken to LaShonda's house by Paulo. That house was on Steven's. No one was home so he jumped the fence into the backyard and hid in the shed until the next day. He again knocked on the door the next morning. LaShonda opened it and let Campbell in the house. He told her that he didn't shoot the officer, that McNeary did it. Campbell went back into the shed for awhile while LaShonda left the house. Later that night Campbell saw the police out front, so he jumped the fence and was confronted by 2 guys with guns. They were in blue jeans and windbreaker type jackets. They told him to get to the ground, which he did. Campbell didn't say anything at that time, and didn't know who these 2 guys were. Campbell asked the neighbors to "call the police or NAACP". Campbell was arrested and has been in custody since then. Campbell isn't a ghetto celebrity, only the CO's and inmates say that. Campbell thinks that is stupid and he doesn't like that being said. A phone call to Robert Jr. while in jail when he talked about McNeary hiding after hitting someone at the party... Campbell didn't want to say too much because he knew it was recorded, he didn't want to name names. Campbell didn't say McNeary did it because he was afraid people would find out he said that, it would come out in court and he would be labeled as a snitch. Campbell said " you can get hurt by the person you snitch on or their associates". It is more serious if the person is in jail because they might put you in "protective custody". Campbell hasn't been threatened while in jail by other inmates. Campbell is afraid of going to prison, and someone trying to do something to him there. Campbell is testifying because it is the right thing to do. Campbell was too scared to turn himself in while he was a fugitive, he is scared of McNeary and his gang. Campbell is still afraid of McNeary today. Campbell has told the truth. Testifying has caused him more concern, he doesn't want to be labeled as a snitch because something can happen in prison with the "crypts". Crypts do violent things to people. LANE: Campbell feels guilty that he gave a gun to someone that killed an officer. He thought having a gun was a crime, it was a felon in possession of a firearm. Campbell feels he did something wrong and thought he committed a crime by giving McNeary the gun. The police was somewhat respectful when they arrested Campbell. Campbell said one officer slammed his head in the car and put the cuffs on too tight. Campbell hasn't bragged or thought it was cool when he was arrested. Campbell told Staccota Clarida and Sebastian Cadena that he was going to an "E" party the night of the 27th. He talked on the phone to people while he was in jail. He told someone that he planned on suing the County after he got out of jail. He said "County is scared because they are going to get sued out of their ass" " They are going to have to pay him". He said the County was lying about him, and he was going to take the money and leave the County. The County lied and assassinated his character by saying that he killed the officer. The County made him look like a violent person, which he isn't. Lane then pointed out his 12 felonies he has been convicted of. His idea of a violent person is someone who puts their hands on people, and he doesn't do that. Campbell never had a conversation with his father that Ruben Martinez says he heard. Several months before this incident Campbell's dad had misplaced the gun, but it wasn't taken from his room. Campbell never took his fathers gun. Andrew Withers lied when he said Campbell had his dad's gun when they committed a burglary together. Campbell never talked to his father about the shooting, and can't recall if they talked about the gun being involved. In your letter how come you didn't say "I didn't shoot the officer"? I don't know why i didn't just say that. What does "thug" mean? It means to be strong, it has more then one meaning. Letter said "bulls**t put through" meant he didn't listen to his parents. Campbell didn't know why he just didn't write "I didn't shoot the officer", he did the best he could. Campbell called his brother Edwin "slick". He wanted Edwin to stop getting in trouble. Edwin was convicted of 5 robberies. In letter said "too late for me, i have to thug it out" he was scared he might die or go to jail, he did something wrong by having a gun. Campbell feels bad, somewhat. In an conversation Campbell told his mom the officer was a jerk, and wasn't a good officer like everyone thought he was. Campbell heard people had made complaints about the officer. Campbell said that because he was stressed and upset. Campbell thought it would be good for his case that the officer was a bad cop. The letter was his last opportunity to communicate with his family, so he told Robert Jr. to keep up with football, told Edwin to change attitude, told dad not to stress, asked to tell Tavia the truth. Why didn't you say Tavia " I didn't shoot the cop?", because I'm not a good speller, and didn't know what to write. Do you know how to spell "I"? Yes. Do you know how to spell "did"? Yes. Do you know how to spell "not"? Yes. Do you know how to spell "shot"? Yes, "Shoot?" Not for sure. So why didn't you write " I did not shoot the cop"? I don't know. They then diagrammed the shooting scene, and Campbell put Jeff's body near the front of the car. He later pointed out after Lane said it, that he was wrong with the body according to crime scene photos. He put the body where he thought it was . McNeary was able to see the gun on the floor of the car because he was close to the car when Campbell was parking. Campbell handed it through the window. The officer parked his car behind Campbell's, got out of his car, walked in a half circle toward the front of Campbell's car. The officer asked "what's your name or what are you doing here?". McNeary then shot the officer, Campbell saw the officer fall backwards. Campbell didn't touch or move the officer, neither did McNeary. Campbell looks at photos and had body in wrong spot. McNeary shot the officer while Campbell was in the driver seat. Campbell couldn't see the gun fire because he was blocked by the car roof. Campbell didn't drive away because he panicked and ran. Campbell's car wasn't totally blocked in by the police car. An earlier incident with SJPD Ofc. Alvarado who pulled over Campbell on a "mini-bike". Campbell had weed and money, the officer took Campbell license. When the officer tried a pat search Campbell tried to grab his license and then ran away. Campbell panicked and ran just like in this incident. At the Good Guys, Campbell tried to buy a TV with counterfeit card. Campbell saw police and tried to run, again. The officers ended up getting hurt, it wasn't what Campbell wanted to do. Campbell just tried to run away, that is what his mind told him to do. Campbell's father wasn't at the Good Guy's to help Campbell. Campbell said he called his brothers when he got to Tyree's house. Edwin and Robert Jr. both testified that they didn't hear from Campbell that night. Lane and Campbell went over phone records, Campbell didn't recall most calls. Robert Sr. testified that he heard from someone that night but didn't know who it was. How did Robert Sr. hear about the shooting if you didn't talk to him? And no one else knew you were there? I don't know. Did you call your dad when you first went home? I don't think so. Laurie testified that your father got home around 5:30am, he would have had to leave Sacramento by 3am to get home by that time. Campbell can't recall if he talked to his father earlier that night about the fight. Campbell can't recall if he told Quincy "its all bad". Campbell had Quincy's phone but didn't remember incoming calls to that phone. Campbell didn't call Janee Gilmore's grandma's house that morning at 4:44am from Tyree's phone. Campbell doesn't know who called, he knew Janee was at Kira's house. In jail Campbell has gotten notes from other inmates. Campbell then called someone and read the note over the phone, even though he does have trouble reading. Campbell has read police reports in this case, and has listened to interviews in this case. Campbell can't deny what Gerald or Louella said while testifying and being interviewed by the police. Campell said NAACP head Rick Callender said the police would kill Campbell, even though Callender was "helping" police locate Campbell to turn himself in. He did talk to Priscella about this case. Priscilla told him that people were getting pulled over and cops threatened Campbell's life. He did argue with Edwin at times about brothers stuff. Campbell gets lonely in jail and likes to talk to people on the phone. He never exaggerated anything about this case.

That is it for today. The next court date is April 27th. We are off all next week. Thanks to the officers and DA's office for being there with us today!!
